CHOOSE LAW. CHOOSE THE LAW SOCIETY.

Members of the Law Society belong to a long, proud history and an association that has been speaking on behalf of the legal profession and defending the rights of all since 1884. Our network of expert policy committees draws on the collective knowledge and experience of members to promote public debate on law reform and legal policy issues.

REGULATING THE PROFESSION We are a regulator of the largest body of lawyers in Australia. Sharing co- regulatory duties with the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner, we set and enforce professional standards, license solicitors to practise, investigate complaints, and administer discipline to ensure the community and the profession are properly served by ethical and responsible solicitors. UNITING THE PROFESSION We aim to unite the profession, helping members across NSW stay in touch with legal developments and fellow solicitors via a range of quality publications, networking opportunities, and regional law societies. We provide a wide range of services to improve members’ professional and personal lives so you can provide a better service for your clients and uphold the integrity of the profession. LAW SOCIETY COMMITTEES Members have the opportunity to make a direct impact on law reform and policy development by serving on one of 21 expert policy and practice committees. The Law Society committees bring solicitors together to actively engage in law reform through policy submissions. They also provide solicitors with a range of useful resources in specific areas of practice. Members will be invited to apply for committee positions in September.

LAW SOCIETY COUNCIL The Council leads the Law Society and oversees its strategic direction. Members are encouraged to vote in the annual Council elections, and are also eligible to stand for election. Nominations are invited in September and elections are held in October. The election results are announced at the Law Society Annual General Meeting. REGIONAL LAW SOCIETIES One in five NSW lawyers practises outside of Sydney and our network of 29 Regional Law Societies allows you to be heard and contribute to the profession. Regional representatives meet regularly in Sydney, providing an important link to the President and Council. Regional Law Societies provide practical support for members through CPD seminars, networking, and communication about local issues. NSW YOUNG LAWYERS NSW Young Lawyers membership is free for law students and practitioners (including barristers) in NSW who are under 36 years and/or in their first five years of practice. NSW Young Lawyers offers a wide range of programs and resources, and there are opportunities to contribute to 16 committees, which meet monthly. NSW Young Lawyers supports practitioners in the early stages of their career development by giving them the opportunity to extend networks, expand knowledge, and contribute to the profession and community.

PRO BONO AND COMMUNITY The Pro Bono Scheme helps applicants who are ineligible for Legal Aid and have satisfied a means and merit assessment. Eligible applicants are referred to a law firm or assisted in-house. Help includes legal advice, preparing documents and ongoing legal representation. We also reach out to the community to share our knowledge and experience in legal practice. Solicitors are encouraged to deliver pro bono talks to community groups and secondary schools. It’s a useful way to build your professional profile, target new clients, and create legal awareness in the community. PRESIDENT’S MEDAL The President’s Medal is an annual award recognising practitioners who are outstanding in their fields. The award acknowledges significant personal and professional contributions to the betterment of law and justice. Nominations open in July. The winner is determined by a selection panel comprising three people and chaired by the President of the Law Society. LAWASIA The Law Society hosts LAWASIA, the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific. Our relationship with LAWASIA gives us a unique opportunity to contribute directly to its efforts in advancing justice, the rule of law and human rights, as well as the capacity to strengthen the legal profession in our region.

CHOOS KNOWL

The best result for me is when a client can say at the end of it, ‘You know, we had an awful situation, and where we have got to – together with you, as a team – is a really good result’. That’s a real win.” PETER BUTLER, LITIGATOR, HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS LAW SOCIETY MEMBER SINCE 1984

CHOOSE LAW. CHOOSE THE LAW SOCIETY.

Knowledge is power, and we want our members to be ahead of the game. We offer quality content in our print and digital publications, practical information, education and resources designed with your needs in mind. This year, we will launch a suite of new digital products aimed at making our extensive resources even more accessible.

The website, which is undergoing redevelopment, includes Careerhub, an online tool to help members build skills and realise their potential, and features a range of practical articles offering insights on what it takes to succeed at every stage of your career. The recently launched StudentHub is designed to help law students and graduates forge a career in law. EDUCATION AND CPD Our comprehensive Legal Education Program is one of the largest in Australia and includes a range of topics covering legal updates, technical and soft skills, practice management, wellbeing and procedural matters. In 2017 , we will offer more than 300 sessions designed for lawyers at all stages of their careers. These will be offered in a variety of formats including workshops, lectures, webcast and podcast, meeting the needs of time-poor city solicitors as well as those in regional areas. This year, we will also launch a new learning portal, which is a state-of- the-art website that allows members to register for educational activities and keep track of their CPD units. Members receive discounts on all sessions and can save podcasts they’ve purchased so they’re available to refer to at any time, in one place. We also offer a comprehensive range of practical courses online and face-to-face that can equip support staff and new solicitors with legal knowledge and administrative skills.

SPECIALIST ACCREDITATION Our Specialist Accreditation Program recognises the expertise of individual members, helping lift their profile within the profession and the general public. Specialist Accreditation is based on peer assessment of skills and knowledge and, for this reason, the program has become a cornerstone of legal professional development in NSW. In 2016 , 80 solicitors completed assessment material and exams at a level high enough for them to achieve Specialist Accreditation. The Law Society offers accreditation exclusively to members across 13 practice areas and more than 1,600 NSW solicitors have been accredited so far. THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Now in its seventh year, our Thought Leadership Program plays an important role in leading discussion, raising awareness and changing behaviour on issues affecting our profession and the wider community. The events over breakfast, lunch, or in the evening are designed to bring together solicitors, members of the Bar and judiciary, as well as thought leaders from business and government. In 2017 , we will also launch the all new LSJ Speakers Series, featuring eminent personalities who have featured in the pages of the LSJ .

PRINT AND DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS Our award-winning flagship publication, the LSJ , is published DGE

monthly in print and digital formats. It features contributions from respected members of the legal profession as well as talented Australian journalists. Our suite of member-only digital products is created specifically for solicitors and keeps members up-to-date with news, trends and insights. Our most popular e-newsletter, Monday Briefs, covers the key issues and events happening each week and offers valuable updates on important news and developments, legislative changes, exclusive services for members, as well as upcoming seminars and training. WEBSITE The Law Society website (www.lawsociety.com.au) is a free, comprehensive resource touching on everything to do with the Society.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT The Law Society Registry can answer queries in respect of your practising certificate, contact details of solicitors and firms, historical searches and mandatory CPD requirements. The Law Society of New South Wales (Limitation of Liability) Scheme allows members in private practice to limit their occupational liability to nominated limitation amounts. Conditions apply. COMPLIANCE ANALYSIS REVIEWS A Compliance Analysis Review can make your firm more efficient by helping you understand your professional responsibilities and providing practical solutions to any compliance issues your firm faces. This free, confidential service is available to firms across NSW. TRUST ACCOUNTING The Trust Accounts Department offers help to practitioners and support staff about the receipt, holding and disbursement of trust money. The department also maintains practical resources including trust account record templates, seminar notes, and the online statutory deposit calculator.

POLICY AND PRACTICE We work to influence government, parliament and key stakeholders on behalf of our members. Our policy team, together with representatives of the legal profession, made almost 200 policy submissions to government last year. Over the next year, key issues will include the rule of law, criminal law and national security, civil justice reforms, access to justice, advancement of women, and resourcing of the justice system. COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT Lifeline for Lawyers offers a free and confidential 24/7 telephone crisis support service exclusively for our members. The Law Society’s Specialist Panel offers solicitors confidential access to an independent panel of specialists including counsellors, psychologists, GPs and psychiatrists. The program coordinator is an experienced solicitor who can refer members to counsellors, agencies or schemes for further assistance. LawCare provides confidential access to a professional counsellor. LEGAL EXPERTISE Members of our Professional Conduct Advisory Panel form a panel which can assist if you are the subject of disciplinary proceedings. Our Legal Information Officer can assist with information across a range of areas

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS The effective handling of complaints against legal practitioners contributes to the maintenance of high standards in the profession, as does education and helping solicitors on a range of ethical, costs and regulatory compliance issues. We provide information and resources to help solicitors understand and comply with their legislative obligations and professional demands in regard to ethics, regulatory compliance and practising certificates and mandatory CPD. Look for our fact sheets and seminars to help lawyers understand the Legal Profession Uniform Law, which has created a uniform regulatory framework for lawyers across NSW and Victoria. We also help solicitors who are uncertain of their obligations when it comes to disclosure or “show cause” events, and can help appoint a practice manager if a solicitor becomes ill or dies.
